Notes
Includes A World of His Own, an article by Humphrey Carpenter introducing The Silmarillion. See pp.29-34.

It includes:

1) Extracts from an autobiographical letter to Deborah Webster Rogers dated 25 October 1958. The full letter was published in The Fictitious Characters of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

2) Extract from a letter to Colonel Worskett dated 20 September 1963 describing The Silmarillion.

3) Extract from a letter from Tolkien to Milton Waldman written c.1951 regarding his mythology. An extensive extract from this letter is included in many editions of The Silmarillion issued from 1999.

4) A brief anecdote concerning Tolkien and accusations of escapism in his works. "What class of men would you expect to be most preoccupied with, and most hostile to, the idea of escape? JAILERS!”

The letters are reprinted in more extensive form in The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien (1981).
